Dental Assisting: About the Career

After graduating from any of the accredited dental assistant schools, dental hygienists are able to assist dentists with many different tasks on a daily basis. Their main job duty is to clean and polish their patients'' teeth. They do this by using hand and rotary instruments, as well as other technology designed especially for dental workers. With these instruments, they are able to remove deposits such as stains, calculus, and plaque from teeth. These types of deposits are what can eventually cause tooth decay and gum disease.

In addition to cleaning teeth, dental hygienists teach their patients how to develop and maintain good oral health. They educate patients about good nutrition in relation to their teeth and gums and how to choose the best types of toothbrushes. Dental hygienists also use models of teeth to show their patients how to brush and floss their teeth properly. Other job duties that dental hygienists learn in dental assistant schools include taking and developing dental x-rays, applying fluorides and sealants, and administering anesthetics to patients.
