Most dental assistant schools offer instruction in subjects relevant to this field like anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, and nutrition. In addition to classroom instruction, you will have laboratory and clinical instruction. Job Duties of a Dental Hygienist A dental hygienist performs many duties throughout the workday. These workers clean and polish their patients' teeth, examine the teeth and gums for signs of disease and tooth decay, take and develop x-rays of their patients' teeth, and apply fluoride and sealants.
