If you are interested in becoming a dental hygienist, you should be aware of the specific personal qualities that are required to be successful in this type of career. For example, you should possess strong interpersonal skills because you will be working with patients on a consistent basis. Another important quality that is needed for dental assisting professionals is the ability to multi-task. You should be able and willing to perform whatever task may be asked of you and be able to complete it in a timely manner. A dental hygienist should also be caring and compassionate, as well as hard working.
Required Training
If you decide that you want to pursue a career in dental assisting, you must enroll in any of the accredited dental assistant schools in your area. These schools offer many different types of degrees and certificates for this program. Most dental assistant schools offer instruction in subjects relevant to this field like anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, and nutrition. In addition to classroom instruction, you will have laboratory and clinical instruction.
Job Duties of a Dental Hygienist
A dental hygienist performs many duties throughout the workday. These workers clean and polish their patients' teeth, examine the teeth and gums for signs of disease and tooth decay, take and develop x-rays of their patients' teeth, and apply fluoride and sealants. Other job duties include teaching patients about proper oral hygiene, how to brush and floss properly, and about how to select the best toothbrush available.
